Most of us were never taught to read our periods — to understand what the color, texture, or timing might mean. But your period is more than just a monthly inconvenience; it’s your body communicating with you. This isn’t about judgment but awareness.
What healthy flow looks like
Bright red blood that flows steadily for 3–6 days usually reflects a balanced cycle: healthy ovulation, stable estrogen and progesterone, and a smooth uterine lining.
When the color changes
- Pink or very light blood may suggest low estrogen, over-exercising, or stress-related depletion — often seen in athletes or during perimenopause.
- Dark, brown, or clotted blood points to stagnation or incomplete shedding, possibly linked to estrogen dominance or poor circulation.
In Ayurveda, this reflects blocked Apana Vata — the downward energy of elimination.
When bleeding feels heavy
Heavy bleeding — soaking through pads hourly or lasting beyond seven days — may signal too much estrogen, low progesterone, or uterine or thyroid issues. It can indicate that the body is building up more than it can release.
When bleeding is light or absent
Very light or missing periods often stem from stress, low body weight, perimenopause, PCOS, or thyroid imbalance — a sign your body is conserving energy.
Your period is a mirror of internal balance. Its changes reveal how your hormones, energy, and vitality are doing. Don’t panic over occasional shifts — your body isn’t a machine, but a living, adaptive system. Still, if changes persist for several cycles, it’s worth listening and seeking guidance.
